A natural passion for art
Expatriate Housing & Rental Magazine:

The woman behind Oriental Art Affair is Jurema W. Baker. Originally from
Brazil, this amazing lady has lived most of her adult life as an expatriate.
This lady is very well travelled, having lived in many countries, Jurema now
calls Malaysia her home. And to hear her say that she has no intention of ever
living anywhere else is a compliment to Malaysia. To hear her speak about her
love of this country and the Malaysian people is infectious.
Oriental Art Affair began with a passion and a love for art. Having always
had an immense penchant for art in all its forms, Jurema began her journey with
an avid interest in restoration in the early 80’s. To see pieces of history left
neglected through time or abuse made Jurema all that more determined to
preserve. Having an academic background in Islamic and Chinese Art, it was only
natural that Jurema would call her company Oriental Art Affair. Her love of the
East, her love for all art and her long time affair with all things beautiful,
is how it all began.,/p>
Having a background in interior design also, Jurema has successfully run three
art galleries. Two in Brazil and one in London, before deciding to make Malaysia
her permanent “home” and setting up Oriental Art Affair here in K.L.
To visit Jurema’s gallery is a feast for every one of your senses. Both new
and established artists receive equal attention from Jurema. You can find a
restored 19th century statue of Buddha comfortably placed next to a naïve
painting from Brazil with the light from a scented candle placed in a lacquered
bamboo stand not far away. All of the pieces are at home with each other as if
they have always belonged together.
Besides her restoration work and the sourcing of art that keeps her very
busy, Jurema has also embarked on developing her own technique of preserving
nature into stylish and elegant accents for the home. Jurema sees beauty in
everything. A leaf magically becomes a table centrepiece, coconut bark is
transformed into a serving tray, Malaysian fruits become decorative items –
forever, with the lacquered process that Jurema has perfected after many years
of research. Candle stands, wine coolers, napkin holders, and breadbaskets made
from nature’s bounty will enhance the décor of your home and yet are functional
as well.
